Overview: The following is a presentation series by Weston Wellington, vice president of Dimensional Fund Advisors, discussing the economy's effect on investors and their holdings. Weston's talk is divided into six parts. To access each part, click on the links below. What Is DFA's Approach Under Adverse Business Conditions? In part one, Weston explains how markets price securities, the fallacy of searching for winning stocks or fund managers and how risk should be incorporated into portfolios. How Do Recessions Affect Stock Prices? In part two, Weston describes how the market sets prices, then explains that investors bear additional risk during recessions, so they should have higher expected returns on their investments. Why Didn't We See the Problems Coming? In part three, Weston demonstrates why it is so difficult (if not impossible) to forecast tough market times, and why investors cannot profit from that information even if they have it. How Do Stock Market Returns Compare With Previous Downturns? In part four, Weston shows the returns around various periods of market difficulty and how the market has rebounded from each period. Is Nationalization a Threat to the Free Enterprise System? In part five, Weston addresses investor concerns that the United States is moving toward heavier amounts of government intervention in the markets. He demonstrates that even if this is true, it does not provide investors with reason to worry. What Should Investors Do Now? In part six, Weston discusses investing alternatives — including real estate and gold. He also points out that trying to jump in and out of different investments, or trying to time the market, is a game the vast majority of investors are unlikely to win.
